Most Obvious Signs of Teething

There are common signs that babies exhibit when their first tooth is about to appear. Although there are a few babies who don’t manifest these signs when their teeth started appearing, the majority of babies have been showing them. Between the ages of four months to one year old, the most obvious signs of teething will be recognizable and parents must watch out for them.

Many babies become restless and irritable. Parents often find their little babies who were usually cheerful suddenly become very difficult to please. There would be bouts of crying for no possible reason. This is because of the pain and soreness in their gum brought about by the erupting tooth. And because of this, babies may not feed well and may lose weight.

They would often suck on their fingers or anything that they could reach to ease the pressure in their gums thus relieving the soreness there. Most parents provide teething rings, cold bottle of water or their fingers for babies to suck on. However, care must be taken to provide babies with sterilized objects to be placed in their mouths to prevent the introduction of bacteria and the development of infection. And babies must be watched all the time, as they could choke on other objects that lie around them.

Babies also tend to drool and develop some rash around the chin when the drooling becomes excessive. The rash is more often caused by the presence of saliva around the area, so a gentle dab around the mouth area every once in a while is advisable.

Frequent wakefulness at night also becomes a problem as the pain increases. This is most often shown during the appearance of the very first tooth and the molars.

Other signs of teething include fever, cold-like symptoms and diarrhea. These symptoms are frequently observed by parents when their children are showing signs of teething. However, many doctors disagree with the association of these symptoms to the teething of babies. So it is better to consult the pediatrician with these symptoms so a proper management could be given to the baby.
