The Best Way to Deal with Teething Pain

The first signs of teething pain often appear a few days before the first tooth actually comes out of the gum tissue. This will cause discomfort, soreness, swelling and pain in the baby’s gum and would be manifested by innability to sleep at night, irritability, constant crying, and refusal to finish feeding. He would also drool excessively and have a tendency to suck on his fingers and hands. The pressure on his gums brought about by sucking on his hands and fingers or any object could help lessen his distress and his teething pain.

Parents often have a hard time consoling their baby in such situations. Singing and swaying him to sleep could be tiresome for them because as they stop the activity their baby would wake up and resume his moodiness.

However, there are ways to comfort your baby when he is experiencing teething pain. You could try diverting his attention with funny games and toys. You can also try giving him a cold teething ring to bite and play with. A cold apple could also work, or a cold bottle of water. Sometimes parents offer their fingers for the baby to suck on. A gum massage using a wet cloth also works for some babies.

All of these may or may not work for your baby as all babies have different responses to pain and what works for them. But in all these options, it is imperative that you be extremely choosy in what you give for your baby. Just be very sure that all these items, teething rings, apple, your finger are all clean before putting them into your baby’s mouth in order to prevent your baby from acquiring an infection on top of his present teething problems.

You can always go and seek consultation with your child’s pediatrician so he could give you proper instructions on what appropriate pain relievers or home remedies you could use to help you and your baby survive this trying event in your lives.
